We all have time management issues. Each day we have a frog which is ugly and big. We have to eat that frog. The frog here is our work. Rule 1:

“If you have to eat two frogs, eat the ugliest one first”

Let’s say that you have two important work you need to finish. This rule means you have to first finish the hardest and the most important task. Then again eat the next ugliest frog that is, finish the next hardest and most important task as soon as you finish the first task. When you finish off the most important first two tasks for the day, that are harder to do, you will feel relaxed and it will give you a sense of achievement.

Rule 2:

“If you have to eat a live frog at all, it doesn’t pay to sit and look at it for very long”

When we have the hardest thing to do, instead of doing that work most people will sit and worry about how to do that task, instead of actually doing it. Sitting and thinking about how to do that job will not going to benefit us. Instead go eat that frog that is, start doing the work and finish off the work without much thinking. For this, you have to instill in yourself the habit of taking action immediately.

Rule 3:

“Think on paper”

Most people don’t get their work done because they don’t actually take to sit and write their tasks for their day on paper. We should have a to-do list for the day and spend some 10 to 15 minutes listing it down. This 10 to 15 minutes can actually save you an hour because you already know what you have to do. Not only for the day, but we should also prepare a plan for the week and the month in the previous weeks and months respectively to save time.

Rule 4:

“Resist the temptation to clear up small things first”

Its human tendency that when we are faced with a large number of tasks to do, we usually go with the tasks that are smaller and easier to do. To beat procrastination and eat that frog, you must learn to resist this temptation first. Always start your day by finishing the hardest and the most important task at hand. After that, you can go with the smallest tasks that add very little or no value to your work.

Rule 5:

“Long-term thinking improves short-term decision-making”

Before taking any decisions for today think about your long-term plans and goals that you have. And think about whether the work that you are doing at present will add any value to your long-term goals. Successful people plan their present keeping their future in mind. They will not waste time on those tasks that are not adding any value to their growth in the long term. Always ask yourself about the consequences of the task that you are going to do now.

Rule 6:

“Future intent influences and often determines present actions”

When you have a clear intention about your future, you can take clear decisions about your present and act according to that. If you have an important task at hand, and not completing it will lead to serious effects, then you will definitely start working on it and try to finish it on time. Likewise, when you have a plan then you can automatically start working on it in the present without further wasting your time.

Rule 7:

“There will never be enough time to do everything you have to do”

Most people waste their time because they try to do every single work on their own without delegating it. Successful people always delegate their work and they do the work which they can do best and that can be done only by them. They don’t waste their time and stress over low-value activities. Even in your work, when you look closely, among the many works you do, as little as 5 things only add value to your work, and other works you can delegate as well.

Rule 8:

“You can get your time and your life under control only to the degree to which you discontinue your lower-value activities”

This is where you have to learn the art of saying no politely. If you are asked to do work, that adds little or no value to your work, you should say no. What you do over repeated time becomes your habit? And what happens if you do only the tasks that have no value, you will not grow or contribute anything to your work or your business. Stop doing this to take back control of your time.

Rule 9:

“Your weakest result area sets the height at which you can use all your other skills and abilities”

Determining your key result areas is important to understand this role. Let’s say that 6 skills are needed for you to be effective in your work. Analyze your skills and performance and identify the weakest key result area. This is the area where much of your time is getting wasted. So you should start working and developing your skill in this area and should become stronger in it. This will help you to waste any time and to eat that frog.

Rule 10:

“It is the quality of time at work that counts and the quantity of time at home that matters”

The main aim of time management that everyone should understand is that learning to manage your time is not only for you to become better at work. But also to spend your time effectively at home with your family too. If you are practicing all the time management tactics, but still not finding time to spend at your home, then you are doing something wrong.

Rule 11:

“Continuous learning is the minimum requirement for success in any field”

Be it any field, continuous learning is essential. As there is a lot of technological advancement going on that influences all areas of life. So you should allot some time to learn in your field every day. This will help in your career or business growth as well. And also helps you to eat that frog.
